Lots of times when I’m writing a blogpost, I don’t know what it’s going to be about till I start writing. A “writing burden” fills my heart, and just like that, I know it’s time.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will speak through me. I pray that hearts will be made ready for this word. I pray that the word of God on this day will fall on fertile ground. As I plant this seed, may the Lord cause there to be an increase in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Acts 19: 23-27 CEB
At that time a great disturbance erupted about the Way. There was a silversmith named Demetrius. He made silver models of Artemis’ temple, and his business generated a lot of profit for the craftspeople.
He called a meeting with these craftspeople and others working in related trades and said, “Friends, you know that we make an easy living from this business. And you can see and hear that this Paul has convinced and misled a lot of people, not only in Ephesus but also throughout most of the province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands aren’t really gods.
This poses a danger not only by discrediting our trade but also by completely dishonoring the great goddess Artemis. The whole province of Asia—indeed, the entire civilized world—worships her, but her splendor will soon be extinguished.”
This is a simple message, yet I can feel the weight of it on my heart.
Paul was going about preaching the Gospel, doing the work of God, and performing unusual miracles. Many hearts and lives were surrendered unto God.
Then comes Demetrius. Demetrius heard of the mighty things God was doing through Paul. He heard of the message of Christ Paul was preaching, and he was threatened by it. He was threatened by it simply because it could disrupt his work, his singular source of income. And so he worked to sabotage the Gospel of God.
It’s easy to see how important money was to Demetrius. So what happened next? The devil capitalised on his love for money. His love for money became an obstacle to the transforming power of the gospel of God.
And so it is with us. There are so many things we hold so dear to our hearts that the devil places it as obstacles to the Gospel of God in our lives.
These are little things that keep people from fully surrendering to God. They are numerous, and also very person specific.
Ask yourself. What is preventing you from having a true and personal relationship with God?
Friends? What are they going to think? What if they stop hanging out with me? I might lose might popularity.
Irrational fear. What will happen next? Do I have to stop going for parties? Change the way I dress? Start listening to gospel music? Stop having sex? Break up with bae?
Whatever your reason is, listen to this, it does not count. Your reason is not enough to keep you away from God. God loves you too much. And absolutely nothing can separate you from that love.
Step out of your reason today. Run into the open arms of God and cling tightly to it, don’t let go. You and I, we need God more than ever right now.
Isaiah 55:6-7 hcsb
Seek the Lord while He may be found; call to Him while He is near.
Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, so He may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for He will freely forgive.
