This is a sensitive subject, and so I was a bit reluctant to do a blogpost on it. A lot of people have a lot of different views concerning music and the kind of music we should listen to as Christians.
I cannot say listen to this, and don’t listen to this. No. All I have to say is, discern. We have to constantly discern.
Music is such a powerful tool, it really shouldn’t not be underestimated.
Don’t believe me? Wanna see how powerful music it is? I’ll show you.
1 Samuel 16: 14-23 (I’ll be paraphrasing so check it out in your free time) talks about King Saul, and how he had an evil spirit that used to trouble him.
In response to this, King Saul and his servants decided to look for a person who could play the harp, because they knew that music would relieve him of this affliction.
And so they chose David. When His servants listed the attributes that caused them to choose David, one of them was – The Lord was with Him. (I’ll come back to this by the way)
Long story short, David played this harp. And the evil spirit departed.
Mm. Are you pondering what I’m pondering? I don’t know if you see the lesson I see here yet.
Music caused Saul’s deliverance. Music from an anointed man of God caused an evil spirit to pack it’s load and go.
What I’m driving at is, Music can bring you your deliverance, it can also bring about your enslavement.
This brings me to something else. Music have spirits backing them, and spirits are easily transferable.
This is why you listen to certain songs and instantly, a sexual urge
When that happens, you should be able to discern and know the kind of spirit backing that song.
There are also songs you listen to, and instantly you feel this deep connection to God. You instantly want to go into another dimension of worship.
Again, you should know that the spirit of The Lord is backing that song.
Before I forget, the singer is important too.
Have you ever wondered why a certain musician with an amazing voice can minister a particular song in church, and you can just sit there unmoved?
Another person with an average voice will come and minister that same exact song. And you’ll be so affected by it.
It’s about the spirit backing that person.
Again. The Message
The message a song passes is SO important.
What you listen to subconsciously becomes what you’re thinking of. Like cancer, it slowly consumes all of you. So you have to be sensitive about it.
As believers, music carrying messages about sex, getting high, blowing money fast is just not appropriate.
And this is important – A song should not be considered gospel, just because the genre says it is.
What message exactly is the song passing?
Don’t forget Proverbs 4:23 says Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Don’t expose your heart to just anything.
So discern. 1 Peter 4:1 talks about testing all spirits. Music I’m sure included.
One last thing. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says that whatever we do, we should do it all to the glory of God.
And so, let the music that you listen to give glory to God.
Grateful to my friends who also helped me with this post.
